Who was, who is Don Pedro

En français

Don Pedro d'Alfaroubeira is mentioned is a poem of Guillaume Apollinaire, "Le Dromadaire", quoted and translated on the home page of this very site, and after which we named the boat.
Apollinaire does not say who Don Pedro is or was.
We're still searching... Here are the clues we have so far.

Don Pedro d'Alfaroubeira, Infant of Portugal. One of his companions, Gomez de Santistevan, narrated in his "Historia del Infanta D. Pedro." that he set off to visit the seven parts of the world with twelve companions and four dromedaries, returning home after three years and four months.
The celebrated travel book entitled: "History of Prince Don Pedro of Portugal, in which is told what happened to him on the way composed for Gomez of Santistevan when he had covered the seven regions of the globe, one of the twelve who bore the prince company", reports that the Prince of Portugal, Don Pedro of Alfaroubeira, set out with twelve companions to visit the seven regions of the world. These travellers were mounted on four dromedaries, and having passed through Spain, they went to Norway and from there to Babylon and the Holy Land. The Portuguese prince even visited the Kingdoms of Prester John and returned to his own country after three years and four months.
Some very interesting and valuable informations sent from Portugal by Victor Martins:

Dom Pedro Infante Dom Pedro from Avis dinasty was regent of Portugal between 1439 and 1449.
This man had a great victorious life and history. He is a great true hero has you will see. It is a portuguese hero still today. Alfarrobeira was the place and battle where he died.
You can see his history here. but I just took some important parts:
  • Son of portuguese King Dom João I and Filipa de Lencastre (Lancaster) a british princess (this wedding happened because of the british and portuguese alliance against Spain and France)
  • Born in Lisbon - Portugal in 1392
  • He is the brother of the portuguese Infante D. Henrique o Navegador (D. Henrique the Navigator).
  • In 1415 he was made "Duque de Coimbra" and Knight when Portugal conquered Ceuta in Africa. Ceuta still has today his banner with the portuguese armorials.
  • During his regency Portugal kingdom started to invest in maritime exploitation.
  • From 1418 to 1428 the 26 year old Infante Dom Pedro started his great journey "Longa Viagem" during 10 years to the seven parts of the world "Setes Partidas do Mundo" that were the main european courts and the Holy Land. That´s what Apollinaire talks about. In this journey he participated in some battles and won some noble titles from the kings he helped.
  • Main destinations: Spain, France, Germany, Belgium, Turquey, Hungary, Italy, Cyprus, Patmos, Egypt, Palestine, etc...
  • In 1439 he planned the peopling of Azores.
  • In 9 June 1448 Dom Pedro give the crown to Afonso V than came of age. Because of disagreements King Afonso V declared that Dom Pedro was rebel.
  • Died in the battle of Alfarrobeira - Portugal in 1449
  • 20 May 1449 the battle of Alfarrobeira in the civil war between Dom Pedro and Dom Afonso V
  • Even today there are some suspicions that Dom Pedro was murdered.
The Battle of Alfarrobeira:
The Battle of Alfarrobeira took place on May 20, 1449, was a confrontation between the forces commanded by king Afonso V of Portugal and his uncle Afonso, Duke of Braganza, against the army of the rebellious Pedro, Duke of Coimbra. The place was Alverca, near Lisbon, at the margins of the creek of Alfarrobeira. The result was a definite defeat and death of the duke of Coimbra and the establishment of the Bragança as the most powerful house of Portugal.
The world portuguese comunity (Portugal, Azores, Madeira, Brazil, Mozambique, East Timor, Angola, Guinée Bissau, Cap Vert, São Tomé e Príncipe, and Goa, Damao and Diu form India).
This is another Infante D. Pedro ( king D. Pedro I) much earlier that has also a great true history. This one was really king of Portugal. He was born in 1320 and died in 1367. This is the history of Ines de Castro and D.Pedro I...very beautiful.
D. Pedro of Alfarrobeira was a Regent of Portugal (in fact it is like a king...), was born in 1392 and killed in the battle of Alfarrobeira in 1449.
Infante Dom Pedro from Avis dinasty was regent of Portugal between 1439 and 1449. He was born in 1392...
In 1425 (see this document) Henry's ("the Portuguese") brother, Pedro, goes off to Florence (the map center of the universe), and get Toscanelli (who, besides being a merchant and student of mathematics, is also a doctor and a cartographer) to put together all the information he can on maps. So Toscanelli does, including all that great stuff they learned from Ptolemy about making a grid so you can tell where things are (as opposed to the medieval way of just making a cute decorative picture.)
Another great and complete one.
Victor also put together some document about the portuguese navigators and settlements.
Beside the historical details, the informations communicated by Victor reveal two important things regarding Apollinaire's poem. In portuguese, you do not say "Don Pedro", but "Dom Pedro", and "Alfaroubeira" is actually "Alfarrobeira", as presented in the portuguese translation of the poem, which Victor did.

1421
In his book 1421, specially in chapter 18, Gavin Menzies makes numerous references to Dom Pedro, brother of Henry the Navigator. He explains - as mentionned above - how he went to Italy, and how he met Toscanelli and how it relates to cartography. We are currently waiting for Gavin Menzies' authorization to put more about this fascinating topic on this very web site...

You know something, and you want to tell us...
